Not a question, but I walked by your table at anime Boston about a dozen times but didn't approach because I'm a dummy.

You should have said hi! I don’t bite, haha. I’m just as nervous and awkward as anyone walking around at an anime con XD

If you can’t tell which one I am at the table, I’m the one on the left..

When did you start getting into One Piece? :)

I got into One Piece back when Shonen Jump started printing in english!

Specifically I started reading during the Buggy Arc, then I went back and read the earlier chapters. I started watching the anime subbed a little while later and I was hooked! After Enies Lobby though, I started college and didn’t catch up again until just before the Time Skip happened.

I remember when the 4KIDS dub started, haha… what an awful morning. Funimation’s been doing a great job with their dub. I mainly just read the manga now though.

Totally not a question but I forgot to say it was nice meeting you at AX, and that Das Moustache was great. Thanks again!

Thanks for picking up Das Moustache!! I was pretty happy with how that book came out, and It make me really glad to know when someone else enjoyed reading it!

Do you have any tips for getting started in the field of illustration? I'm still only in the middle of high school, and I'm planning on going to an art school for some design and illustration classes after I graduate, but I honestly have no idea where to go from there, and if it’s even the right thing to do in the first place. You've been a pretty big inspiration to me since your early deviantart days, and I know it’s a lot to ask, but can you help me out, Mike?

It’s hard to give this kind of advice, because I’m still figuring it out myself, haha…

The best I can offer is: Draw every day. Practice everything, including your weaknesses. And familiarize yourself with technology! (meaning tablets, photoshop, etc. You’d be surprised how valuable these skills can be). Try to meet people and just be a friendly and pleasant person!

As for Art School, it’s a difficult subject too… I don’t regret going, but it was a tremendous expense. Some people say it’s not worth it, and they aren’t wrong. But I say it’s better than doing nothing! I met some of my best friends in college and I wouldn’t trade the experience for anything. Art school classes are whatever you make of them. Just remember you have to go searching for the knowledge, because it’s not always handed to you!

I hope any of that helps!

Sorry for the lack of posts lately!

I’ve been buried in work the last few weeks. With some luck I should be clearing that all up soon.

But until then, how about some questions! Ask away!

I’m still looking for the missing commissioner! If you see this, contact me ASAP so I can get your commission or your money back to you!
